Marinette Tennis Team Drops Home Match With West DePere

Issue Date: September 2, 2020

West De Pere asserted its dominance on the tennis courts Thursday, defeating Marinette by a score of 7-0.

Each of the seven matchups ended in straight sets for the Phantoms. In singles, Christina Qui defeated Kennedy Zeifert (6-4, 6-3), Brooklynn Steier defeated Macy Hermanson (6-1, 6-1), Stacey Cloute beat Kate Schwaba (6-1, 6-0) and Taylan Wagner won by default.

In doubles, Josie Johnson and Lorraine Qui defeated Lauryn Blystone and Jordan Boettcher (6-1, 6-1), Leah Goodman and Olivia Williams beat Alyssa Greenwood and Carly Bauer (6-2, 6-2) and a pair of Abby Darrow and Amber Burns got a win over Jamie Scully and Anna Pitts (6-3, 6-3).

Despite the loss, Marinette coach Christine Alloy felt things were not as bad as the scores indicate.

"I felt like we were playing at a better level than we did on Tuesday for sure. The girls are using what we're practicing and kind of taking it on the court," she said. "I think they played a lot better than what our scores show that they played. You can have a set that's 6-1, but if they're out there playing for two hours."

Alloy mentioned changes the team made throughout the day, mentioning Kennedy Zeifert as an example. Zeifert was down 4-1 in her first set at singles no. 1, but battled back to keep the score close, losing the set 6-4 after making some productive changes.

"I like it when you can see the girls doing that thought process, taking it on the fly," Alloy said.

The players were also battling the heat, which can make the early season especially difficult depending on players' conditioning and hydration.

Alloy said the heat was a factor, but she "didn't see anybody peter out," saying that the team has been pushing hydration and getting into match shape.

In addition to the team's preparation to play tennis, the players and coaches have had to think about the COVID-19 pandemic and how that affects each match. Alloy feels the season will continue to be successful.

"I think even the other teams we've talked to, we feel like "is there anything else we could be doing?' I think we're doing a good job of that," she said, adding that in early practices, there was some doubt amongst players about whether there would even be a season.

"We're out here playing today, and we'll see what happens tomorrow," she said.

Marines Fight Hard But Fall to New London

Marinette battled hard but fell on the tennis courts by a 5-2 team score Monday against New London.

After a sweep against West De Pere last week, Marinette bounced back to get two wins, along with a couple of close losses.

In singles, Marinette's no. 1 Kennedy Zeifert defeated Emily Kling (7-5, 1-6, 10-5). At no. 2 doubles, Marinette got a win from a duo of Anna Pitts and Jordan Boettcher, who defeated Jessa Muller and Rachel Schuller in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).

In singles, New London's Chaise Guyette defeated Macy Hermanson (7-6 (8), 4-6, 10-2), Sadie Maus defeated Carly Bauer (3-6, 7-5, 10-8) and Zaylie Reimer won by default.

In doubles, New London's team of Maya Krause and Esmerelda Fernandez defeated Lauryn Blystone and Alyssa Greenwood in a very tight match (7-6 (5), 7-6 (7)) and a team of Ava Bellis and Alaena Wolf grinded out a win over Jamie Scully and Kate Schwaba (6-4, 4-6, 12-10).

Marinette Drops Match to FVL

The Marinette tennis team fell by one match to the FVL girls 4-3.

In the singles competiton FVL's Olivia Pethan beat Marinette's Kennedy Zeifert 6-0 and 6-2 while Macey Schaetz took another win for FVL over MArinette's Macy Hermanson 6-1 and 6-0. Adeline Woosley defeated Carly Bauer 4-6, 7-5 and 7-6 while Natalis Fenske took a default win.

In doubles action Marinette's Lauryn Blystone and Alyassa Greenwood defeated FVL's Kylie Toyne and Amelia Segelstrom 6-4 and 6-2. Marinette's Jordan Boettcher and Anna Pitts took down beat Ruth Brink and Deb Brink 6-2 and 6-2 while Jamie Scully and Kate Schwaba took a win for Marinette over Lydia Witthuhn and Elizabeth Oakland 6-3 and 6-4.
