Lindsey Rysewek Is Back As Elderly Nutrition Coordinator

Issue Date: September 2, 2020

Effects of the coronavirus pandemic occupied much of the discussion at the semi-monthly meeting of the Marinette County Committee on Aging Board on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Northwoods Senior Cafe & Center on Hwy. 141 in Crivitz.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Don Phillips. Committee members present in person were Debbie Baumgart and Rick Downs. Colleen Risner and Joan Rocque participated remotely. Others present for the meeting were Elderly Services Director Pam Mueller Johnson, Elder Benefit Specialist Olivia Cherry, Transportation Coordinator Mary Basak, Finance Coordinator Jeff Churchill, Nutrition Coordinator Lindsey Rysewek and Office Coordinator Shelly Menger.

"We are happy to have Nutrition Coordinator Lindsey Rysewek back with the Agency," Mueller Johnson declared at the start of her Director's report. She said they are interviewing a new Wausaukee driver, and reported that two of the Marinette drivers have resigned their positions due to COVID.

In a brief report on Foot Clinics the committee was informed they are looking to re-start toenail clinics and are working on procedures to keep elderly safe.

In her Elder Benefit report Cherry reviewed program statistics, comparing the number of clients that were helped last year to the number so far this year. She noted there isn't that much of a difference, and said even with COVID, people are still utilizing the services.

Cherry said with no support groups happening, her staff and others have been trying to come up with ways to help the elderly with social isolation, and added, "We are going to be starting activities for homebound elderly to get involved in." Packets will be going out to those who would have been invited to the Senior Workshop, which was among events that had to be cancelled.

Cherry said she has compiled a list of providers to help provide either personal or household care for people in need and the agency will give this list out to families or individuals wishing to hire someone on their own and willing to do their own background checks. Motion was made by Baumgart, seconded by Downs and approved to accept the new Provider List.

Rysewek shared a little about herself and stated how happy she is to be back with Elderly Services once again. She also shared a year to date summary of the nutrition program and how COVID has affected counts this year.

There was discussion on how the meal sites and delivery procedures are working out during the pandemic. Rysewek shared some of her upcoming goals for the nutrition program and talked about ways to reach out to participants to keep them involved. She said Home Delivered meal services are up by 24%, with more referrals coming in every day.

Events that had to be cancelled this year due to coronavirus were the Annual Conference for Seniors and Caregivers and Flavors of the Northwoods.

At the stat of the meeting Mueller Johnson, welcomed everyone and introduced Lindsey Rysewek as the new Nutrition Coordinator. She said there had been an open position on the Elderly Services Board for the last few years, and recommended Mike Behnke to fill that position, representing the Peshtigo/Grover area. Behnke is a Marinette County Board Supervisor and a City of Peshtigo Alderman. The committee approved her suggestion of having Behnke appointed and agreed a letter of recommendation should be sent to Marinette County Administrator John LeFebvre. At the Marinette County Board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25 LeFebvre made that appointment and it was confirmed by the board.

Finance Coordinator Jeff Churchill reported that this year's annual audit was done by Kerber/Rose, online and remotely. He stated that all in all doing it that was had gone very smoothly. He explained what the auditors looked at, went over everything with the board, and stated they had received very good reviews. There was discussion on any observations or recommendations the auditors had. Phillips complimented Churchill on doing a great job once again with the audit, and thanked staff for all their assistance.

Transportation Coordinator Mary Basak said she has been researching vehicles and stated that they need two new or used vehicles for delivering meals. She is hoping to have them purchased by the middle of October. There was discussion on the purchasing Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for the vehicles to be used while delivering meals. The committee approved a motion giving authorization to start looking for two used vehicles for meal delivery and to purchase GPS for all the vehicles.

Donation letters were shared before the meeting adjourned. the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Northwoods Senior Cafe & Center in Crivitz.
