Marinette Girls Win NEC Triangular in Oconto Falls

Issue Date: September 23, 2020

Marinette's girls' cross country team won the Oconto Falls triangular on Friday, defeating the hosting Panthers and Wrightstown Tigers.

Marinette's Grace Jones was second of 19 runners (22:17), Sam Pieper was fourth (23:44), Hadley Reines took fifth (23:46) and Molly Knutson came in sixth (24:02).

Ava Dahlman was eighth (24:36), Maya Cariveau took ninth (25:00) and Karissa Valitchka was 18th (27:45).

Valitchka took a minute off her time from last week, just one example of the team's progression, coach Jenni Campbell said. She said most of the team put in similar times, with some slight improvements across the board.

"They've been working hard and it shows," she said. "This is a tough course because the inclines are so gradual. Overall, I think everyone is feeling pretty good."

For Oconto Falls' girls, Hannah Ludemann took third (22:36), Alexis Euclide placed seventh (24:19), Maddy Przybylski took 10th (25:30), Sydney Bell was 12th (26:06), Aspen Canavera took 14th (26:38), Helen Marquardt was 15th (26:46) and Jaden Reed came in 17th (27:44) as the Oconto Falls runners were second as a team ahead of Wrightstown.

Marinette did not have enough boys for a team score, so Oconto Falls and Wrightstown battled it out, with Falls in second and Wrightstown in first.

Oconto Falls did have the top individual finisher in the race, with Joe Adams in first (17:43). Braden Uelman took eighth (19:40), Grant Yuma was 10th (20:07), Aidan Stary placed 11th (20:56), Landon Budz took 17th (22:34), Damien Reed was 19th (23:45) and Evan Decker was 21st (25:21).

Marinette's Ryan Demmith took fifth (19:16), Alec Queever placed seventh (19:37) and Rodney Hollat came in 22nd (27:53).

Gillett Runners Compete at Norte Dame

Gillett competed at the Notre Dame Invite in Green Bay on Friday.

The Tigers competed against Notre Dame, Winneconne and Lourdes Academy at Colburn Park, with the boys taking third as a team and the girls placing fourth.

For the Gillett boys, Derek Hanson was third of 28 runners with a time of 17 minutes, .4 seconds and Evan Peterson was 10th (18:08). The Tigers also had a trio of freshmen competing in the race: Wyatt Wilz placed 23rd (22:32.2), Garrett Klein took 26th (23:42.0) and Grayson Klein was 27th (24:56.9).

Notre Dame was first as a boys team, with six finishers in the top nine, including top racer Conner Hawley (16:46.2). Winneconne was second and Lourdes Academy came fourth as a team.

The top runners on the Gillett girls' team was Ryann Wagner, who took ninth in the 32-runner field (20:21.9). Sylvia Hansen was 11th (21:17.0) and Carleigh Kaczmarek was 13th (21:27.9). Alaina Herzog placed 21st (23:29.2), Megan Wagner was 22nd (23:33.4), Kasey Hansen placed 25th (24:19.3), Laney DeBauch took 27th (25:17.6) and Amber Brehmer came in 30th (25:56.1).

Notre Dame's girls topped the standings as well, with Molly Desotell leading in first place (18:56). Five Notre Dame runners finished in the top eight. Lourdes Academy and Winneconne were second and third, respectively.
