Issue Date: November 18, 2020
In an amazing finish to the 2020 season, the "small but mighty" Marinette & Peshtigo swim team garnered great times along with some new pr's at the WIAA D2 swimming and diving meet held in Waukesha on Friday. Head Coach Calista Thill had this to say about her team's accomplishments. "What an AMAZING way to end the 2020 Swimming season. The 400 free Relay Riley Sabel, Allie Mayhew, Mary Mayhew, and Maija Carriveau shaved off 5 seconds and placed 15th. Allie Mayhew swam a beautiful 100 backstroke placing 8th. Maija Carriveau saw the podium twice, with two awesome swims in the 50 free a 100 Free. Way to go Marine Bulldogs! 2020 has got nothing on you!"
Overall, Marinette finished 18th out of 28 schools with a team score of 45. The Division 2 state championship was won by Rhinelander scoring 255 points followed by Shorewood (228) grabbing second place, while Greendale (202) took third place.
The Marinette/Peshtigo Swim team qualified in a total of 4 events at state, the 50 and 100 Free, 100 Backstroke, and the 400 Free Relay.
Maija Carriveau (Senior), made it to the podium twice. Finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 24.33, and placed 6th in the 100-yard Free with another personal best swim of 53.98.
Senior Allie Mayhew swam to an eighth place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:00.67.
Both Seniors improved on their state swims from last year's championship, Carriveau trimmed .62 seconds off her 50- Yard Free, while Mayhew chopped a huge 3.30 off her 100-yard backstroke.
Allie Mayhew and Carriveau teamed up with Freshman Riley Sabel and Mary Mayhew to swim a sub-4:00 minute time in the 400-yard Freestyle relay to take 15th with a time of 3:56.63.
"I'm so proud of all the accomplishments these girls have made," Marinette head coach Calista Thill said. "The meet was an awesome way to end 2020 and it's an emotional end to the season with Allie and Maija graduating. It was a fun season for all the uncertainty that came with it and as I say to the girls, 2020 has got nothing on us. I can't wait to see what Mary and Riley can bring to the pool next year."
