Wendt Reelected President Of Coleman School Board

Issue Date: May 20, 2021

By unanimous vote at the Coleman School Board meeting on Monday, May 10, all officers were returned to their positions for another term. They are Ryan Wendt, president; Jeremy Hoida, vice president; Joanne Nowak, clerk, and Barb Klug, treasurer. There were no other nominees. All board members were present.

The board also voted without dissent to keep all committee assignments unchanged for the coming term. They are:

*Auxiliary Services Committee (Transportation/Food Service/Finance & Insurance): Kuchta/Chairperson, Hoida, and Klug;

*Building and Grounds: Hoida/Chairperson, Nowak, and Herzog

*Board Policy/Curriculum: Wendt/Chairperson, VanDrisse, and Nowak

*Personnel (Certified and Non-Certified): Herzog/Chairperson, Kuchta and Klug

Preparations for the end of the current school year and the start of the next one are well underway.

Elementary/Middle School Principal Yvette Marshall reported the Middle School will be celebrating 8th graders at the Promotion Ceremony on Thursday, June 3 at 2 p.m. in the High School Gymnasium. Junior Kindergartners will have their graduation on Wednesday, May 26 at 2 p.m., also in the High School Gymnasium.

Marshall congratulated Middle School Students of the Month Vivian Kostreva and Hunter Seefeldt.

She said Summer School class and bus lists are finalized and families are in the process of being informed of placements. Summer school begins Tuesday, June 8. "We look forward to seeing the students when they return!" Marshall declared.

District Administrator and High School Principal Doug Polomis reported Scholarship night will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, preceded by the DC Parent meeting at 5 p.m. in the high school gym.

Graduation will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 4 p.m. Top 10 students for the Class of 2021 are Zac Zablocki, Maddi Hoida, Cameron Compe, Molly Seefledt, Hannah Murley, Thomas Bartnick, Simon Maedke, Cayden Bintz, Adrianna Herlache, and Isabella Straub. Final exams will be held for the high school on Friday, June 4, which is also the last day of school for students and staff.

Polomis also noted the Future Farmers of America will hold their annual plant sale at the end of May.

In line with a recommendation from Taher Food Services, the board agreed to leave food service meal prices unchanged for the 2021-2022 school year, and increase the milk price by five cents - from 40 cents per carton to 45 cents. Meal prices will stay at: Breakfast $1.85, Lunch for pre-kindergarten through grade 5 at $2.85 and for Grades 6 through 12 at $3.15. Adult breakfast price will stay at $2.35 and lunch at $4.05.

Both Marshall and Polomis reported on activities for the week of May 3 through 7, which was Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.

"A special thank you goes out to all who help make the School District of Coleman a great place for our students as they learn and grow as well as to those who go out of their way to show appreciation and support!" Marshall declared.

Polomis told the board employees received a small token of appreciation each day of their special week, and on Wednesday, May 5 they received a Cougar sweatshirt or jacket. He especially thanked the staff this year for all their hard work due to all the changes.

Marshall noted Elementary students participated in Ag Venture Day on Wednesday, April 28. This day, led by High School Agriculture Teacher Cindi Wautier, provided an opportunity for students to experience aspects of the agriculture industry.

Polomis presented a "very preliminary" Fund 10 budget for the 2021-22 school year. He explained many of the financial numbers are still vague, and his purpose now was to present a very preliminary Fund 10 budget "based on what we do know and what we are estimating." He said the budget for state aid has not been set yet and there are other unknown factors, but they do know of salary increases and health and dental insurance increases, "just to name a few expenses."

The school district will receive Esser II Funds of an additional $342,000, but will be receiving less money from Focus on Energy Funding and technology grants, so the preliminary budget shows additional revenue of $82,000.

Polomis added, "Since Mrs. Beland has been in the bookkeeping position, we have always had a balanced budget, have had funds left over at the end of a school year, and never have had to borrow short term." He thanked Beland for her efforts.

After brief discussion the board unanimously approved a resolution to defease a portion of the district's $9,950,000 General Obligation Refunding Bonds. This defeasance will save the district money on interest for the referendum notes. The district had done this previously in February of 2020.

The board also approved creation of a Concession Stand Advisor position as recommended by Polomis. He said other districts have similar positions and this way the same people would be organizing, purchasing supplies for events and handing all the inventory. They will also organize a schedule for each organization to sign up for running concessions for home events.

With no dissenting votes the board approved $115 as the daily rate of pay for a short term substitute teacher, starting starting with the 2021-22 school year.

Other board action included approving Theresa Urrutia as Girls HS Track Coach; accepting resignations of Troy Gruszynski as an elementary teacher and Lindsay Allen as High School Guidance Counselor, and approving 2021-22 Summer Schools and Extra Curricular letters of appointment as presented.

School Board Member Herzog was appointed WASB Delegate with Kuchta as alternate; School Board Member Barbara Klug was named CESA Annual Convention representative; and School Board Member VanDrisse was chosen as Wellness Committee representative.

Start College Now and Early College Credit Program Applications were approved as presented, as were 2022 Early Graduation requests and 2021-22 Open Enrollment In and Open Enrollment Out applications.

The board had a preliminary discussion of the 2021-22 Elementary and Middle/High School Student Handbooks. Most of the changes are technical, for example staffing, calendar dates, index page, etc. The only major change is in the dress code portion of the handbook, and the revisions now align with Board Policy 5511. Polomis explained the reasoning to bring this to the board already is to have formal approval in June, because student registration and athletics open up at the end of July or start of August for the following school year.

After completing regular business at 8:10 p.m. the board went into closed executive session to discuss Employee Compensation and 2021-22 Staffing. They returned to open session at 9:45 p.m. and approved motions for a Technology Coach/ ELL and District Assessment Coordinator Position and a Part Time IT Support Position as well as agreeing to pay out Administration for unused vacation days. The meeting had begun at 7 p.m. and adjourned at 9:49 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 21. Suggested agenda items for that meeting include 2020-21 Budget Revisions, Staff Handbooks, Coaches/Advisors Handbook, AGR, Athletic Worker Pay Scale, Approve Student Handbooks, WIAA Membership,Labor of Love Agreement, and the TRITON Agreement, as well as a closed session for staffing and compensation.
