Cougars Return To State With Win Over Tigers

Issue Date: June 24, 2021

The Coleman Cougars became the 2021 Div 3 Sectional champions Tuesday night when they handed Chilton and nail-biting 3-2 loss.

Though Coleman took the win, it was the Chilton boys who struck first, doing so with a two-run third inning for the 2-0 lead.

Coleman answered back when Karson Casper and Cole Klimek scored for a two-run fifth inning.

Thanks to a Noah Nosgovitz sixth inning run the Cougars were able to take the lead 3-2 and held on for the championship win.

"This second game was very tough," said Coleman head coach Kent Casper. "There were ups and downs and a lot of things going one way and coming back another way. The boys held together and that's what made the difference. I told the boys this is where we have been all year, playing tough games and coming through."

The win moves the Cougars onto state competition where they will face three seeded Regis Tuesday, June 29th.

Coleman Wins Sectional Semi Over Amherst

The Coleman Cougars posted a sectional semi-final win Tuesday night when they took down the boys from Amherst 3-1.

Amherst was first to score in the sectional showdown with a one-run effort in the second inning.

Thanks to some great defense and fantastic pitching the Cougars did not allow a single run more to progress back to home plate.

Coleman got on the board in the third inning when Owen Kinzinger walked to reach base before going home later in the inning.

Thanks to runs by Noah Nosgovitz and Ray Lemieux in the sixth inning the Cougars took the lead and held on for the semi-final win.

"Strong defense and outstanding pitching by Karson," said Coleman head coach Kent Casper. "Great baseball from across the board and we played a great team. Their pitcher was throwing around 85 mph the whole time. But we got the hits and scored."

Lena/STAA's SeasonEnds with Loss to Greenwood

in Sectional Semi

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy's strong baseball season came to an end in sectionals with a 15-1 loss against Greenwood on Tuesday.

This season, Lena/STAA won its first regional championship in some time. Coach Jack Farley said he was told it was the first for the school in 12 years, though he wasn't around the program then. The team finished the year with 10 wins, Farley said.

Greenwood scored eight runs in the first inning, then another two in the second, and five in the third. The game ended in five innings, but it didn't take away from what Lena/STAA accomplished this year.

"We haven't had a winning season in a long time and it really showed the work ethic and the talent of these boys, so I'm really proud of them," Farley said.

Lena/STAA put batters on base in the game, with runners in scoring position in four of five innings, but couldn't match the offensive firepower of Greenwood.

"We threw our best guys at them, and they all put the ball in play the whole game, so you can't hope for much more," Farley said. "Greenwood's pitcher had some control issues and we got some walks, but we didn't really punch through those runs early on, so that kind of hurt us to begin the game. We turned it on at the end. It was a little bit of too little, too late at that point, but I'm proud of the guys. They gave it their all today, so you can't ask for much more."

Ethan Russell walked three times and scored a run, Logan Shallow had an RBI on a 1-for-3 day and Bryce Kittredge was 1-for-2.

Coleman Shuts Out Crivitz In Regional

Playoff Action

The Crivitz Wolverines were no match for the Coleman Cougars who followed through with a 10-0 shutout win in area baseball regional playoff action.

"The boys came ready to play today," said Coleman head coach Kent Casper. "They came ready to play yesterday too. They had the bats warmed up today and they knew they were facing one of the best pitchers from our area. They were very ready for him."

Coleman got on the board in the second inning with a three-run effort that saw Noah Nosgovitz, Tyler Blanchard, and Ray Lemieux all cross in for the 3-0 lead.

"This is baseball," said Crivitz head coach Jeff Dorschner. "I am not bent out of shape about losing tonight. I just feel sad that it's the end of coaching this group of guys. I told this group all year that they have been one of the most enjoyable to coach groups of guys I've ever had. Yeah, you want to win but you want to see them succeed more than just winning this game."

The third saw Zach Zablocki and Blanchard increase the lead to 5-0.

Cayden Bintz got his chance to cross home in the fourth along with Zablocki on his second run of the night.

Coleman shut the night out in the sixth with a three-run effort.

Cayden Bintz took the pitching win allowing just two hits.

"I was looking forward to seeing some good hits," said Casper. "I am very proud of these boys, we lost a lot of seniors from last year and this team stepped up over this season. The offense has come around."

Coach Dorschner went on to say a short farewell to his record-setting team, "Alec and Austin and the rest of the seniors will certainly be missed," said Dorschner. "This group set a school record for wins in a year and beat some really good teams along the way. But Coleman is the number one team in the state for a reason."
