Wagner To Seek Legal Input On Old Depot Demolition

Issue Date: July 22, 2021

At the Wagner Town Board meeting on Wednesday, July 14 â€Town Chair Steve Renikow Sr. requested a moment of silence for Walton Johnson. The family would like to donate a tree to be planted at Town Hall, and it was decided that a committee will be created to decide placement. Mike and Lynda Caylor will represent the Fire Department and Historical Society, and Supervisor Mollie Arthur will represent the Town Board. A plaque will be placed with the tree. The committee will contact the family once decided.

Renikow also announced that a WTA meeting will be held at the Silver Cliff Town Hall on Thursday, July 22 at 7 p.m., and all members of the Board were invited to attend.

Renikow reported that Deb Olson had come back to work at the Recycling Center.

Present for the meeting in addition to Chair Renikow were Supervisors Mollie Arthur and Ed Delfosse, Treasurer Margo Renikow, Clerk Cassie Brown, and 9 members of the public.

During time for public input, Mike Caylor stated the base on the historical sign is deteriorating. He requested to have it replaced. Chair Renikow Sr. said he would take a look at it.

Sam Marzahl questioned the brushing on Boat Launch Road and stated the debris is on private property. Chair Renikow said the brush was cleared to prepare a place for the dock on Lake Mary when it is removed for the winter and asked for the name of the owner of the property to discuss the matter.

Treasurer Renikow reported the town received $35,796.65 from the American Rescue Plan Act. She said $60,000 was transferred from Money Market to Checking to cover disbursements.

Mike Caylor reported the Fire Department had three calls since the last meeting. One was for a co-response to an EMS call, one was a MABAS call for a structure fire in Porterfield and one was for a motorcycle accident. There have been a total of 16 calls for the year to date. Two trucks were sent to Wausaukee for the 4th of July parade.

Caylor said Fire Department members spent 163.5 hours on maintenance, training, and the Jamboree, which was successful. On behalf of the Fire Department, he thanked everyone involved with the Bingo tournaments held at the Heritage. These events raised over $1,500 for the Fire Department.

Chair Renikow stated two 45mph speed limit signs were placed on Wagner Road.

Arthur requested brushing on Broennenberg Road and Old Rail Road due to poor visibility at the stop sign. Renikow said he would look at it.

At the start of a discussion on a request for a Wausaukee â€Back to School†donation Renikow said he wanted to make the public aware of the new relief act funding that should be disbursed to families with children under the age of 18. Arthur said you can opt-out of this funding, and Julie Brown stated these are not extra funds. They are an advance on the child credit provided during tax season. Treasurer Renikow stated these funds go to a committee that supports the school district, but not to the school itself. Motion to approve a $100 donation was made by Arthur, seconded by Delfosse, and approved.

At the start of a discussion on possible legal action in regard to the demolition of the Old Depot Delfosse asked if anyone had been at the property lately. Patty Michels asked about the cost of the lawyer, and Chair Renikow said that still needs to be determined. The town has written letters and tried calling, but there has been no response. It was felt that a letter from an attorney might get better results.

Patty Michels asked if the Town has authority to clean up the property. Chair Renikow Sr. said he believes a court has to order it and recommended consulting with a lawyer to determine the cost and next steps. Arthur will reach out to the lawyer.

Legal action in regard to the Old Depot will be on the agenda for the next board meeting, which was set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11.
