Bulldogs Blitz Blazers to End Regular Season

Issue Date: October 14, 2021

Area Soccer

Peshtigo finished the soccer regular season with a 6-0 rout of Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Monday.

Johnny Conn, Grant Bauman and Brooks Behnke each scored twice in the win. Conn added two assists, while Christian Boyle and Landon Lemke had an assist apiece.

Conn's first goal made it 1-0 less than 12 minutes into the game. A minute and 40 seconds later, Bauman got his first, then his second goal 12 minutes after that extended the advantage to 3-0.

Conn and Behnke scored again before the halftime break, and Behnke's goal was the only scoring of the second half.

Peshtigo coach Joe Denny said that in the first half, NEW Lutheran was playing with just three defenders at the back, as opposed to a typical four-man defense at the high school level.

"Stuff that we've been working on is slotting that forward through their gaps, and when you're playing three defenders, you've got such a big gap in there," Denny said. "We're taking a lot more shots. We're getting better at recognizing what the other team is doing."

The Bulldogs received the nine seed in the Division 4 Sectional and will travel to No. 8 Clintonville for the first round of the playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 21.

The two teams were scheduled to play one another before the end of the regular season, but that game was cancelled due to a lack of referees.

Clintonville is 11-5-0 on the season to Peshtigo's 10-4-1. Denny thinks his team has a good chance to get the win and earn another shot at top-seeded Sturgeon Bay, which beat the Bulldogs 3-0 on Sept. 16 after a flurry of goals with less than 10 minutes to play.

Peshtigo's only losses came on Sept. 9, 11, 16 and 23. Denny said he felt his team could have won all of those games. He's happy with how his team is playing.

"I think this team is playing with conviction. They know they're good and we're starting to put it together," Denny said. "I think the last couple games, our game has really stepped up. We've done a lot better job controlling the ball, a lot better job of passing, so everything that we've been working on is coming together, which we couldn't have picked a better time."

Bulldogs Shutout Wolves

in Conference Contest

Peshtigo's boys got a 3-0 win over Algoma on the soccer pitch Thursday night.

Christian Boyle opened the scoring on an assist from Mauz Salem halfway through the first half.

Shortly before the second half, Johnny Conn made it 2-0, then scored again early in the third off a Grant Bauman assist.

"All our goals were assisted, which tells me we were working as a team. It was a good game for us to work on team dynamics and positioning," Peshtigo coach Joe Denny said. "We got a lot of shots off and got some good looks from our underclassmen in the second half."

Landon Lemke also got some credit from his coach as well for anchoring the defense.

Mason Denny and Colin Engman split time in the net for Peshtigo.

"We're getting the finishing at the net that we were lacking early in the year and this team is playing with determination," coach Denny said. "It was great watching them play as a team to where everyone is contributing."

Marinette Wins in

Iron Mt., Falls to

Wrightstown at Home

Marinette grabbed a 5-2 win over Iron Mountain on Thursday.

Marinette coach Jason Smerchek also gave Brady Golueke A mention after the game for his "great defensive effort" in the win.

Marinette lost 3-2 to Wrightstown on Tuesday.

Dominic Smerchek scored both goals for Marinette, while Noah Cegelski and Owen Hansen each assisted.
