Peshtigo School Board Ok's Bids, Several ResignationsIssue Date: April 20, 2022 The Peshtigo School Board meeting on Wednesday, April 13, started with Katie Berman commending the students that helped with the Peshtigo Food Pantry saying, "With some of our volunteers being on vacation, we are short staffed and some of the students came to help at the pantry and they are a lot of help. The Boy Scouts brought in donated food over the weekend and the students spent a full two hours putting stuff away, checking dates and throwing things away. They come in, take charge and ask where is the vacuum, something needs to be cleaned up. I want to let everyone know that they are so invaluable to the Pantry and we really appreciate that we get to work with the Peshtigo School and the High School Students and thank you very much".
Kevin Roeder then introduced himself sayng, "I am looking forward to working with the board and the kids in the community and will see all of you soon". Roeder won the School Board seat on the School Board against incumbent Kelly Jones
The board approved one resignation, three retirements, and one hiring including Bruce Parkovich resigning as Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Those retiring included Ted Rauch as Middle School Science Teacher; and Jane Gohr and Jodi VanVooren, both as Elementary Teachers. Gohr worked for the District for 33 years and VanVooren just trailering behind with 30 years. Rauch and Gohr will be retiring at the end of the 2021-22 school year and VanVooren's retirement date will be Dec. 31, 2022.
Becky Chaltry was approved to be hired as Middle School Science Teacher, replacing Mr. Rauch. Also approved were the McMahon family, Shawn, Jake and Braden as volunteer assistant softball coaches for the 2022 season.
There were several donations accepted with two donations for Post Prom of $800 from Waupaca Foundry and $300 from Independent Plumbing Services. The spirit pump was in the amount of $358.69 which will be used towards the Senior Banner program. Lastly, a donation was received, from Waupaca Foundry in the amount of $4,734 to benefit the elementary STEM Program.
The Start College Now program included five students signed up for the CNA class and five College 101 classes, which is an intro to college and how to be successful.
Rau then announced, "As our STEM program continues to grow Peshtigo Elementary Learning Center (PELC) fifth grade teacher, Kay Sodini, would like to add a business type model for elementary students. They would be designing items such as earrings and key chains. Sodini would like to see them sold in local businesses or at school through the Pupil Activity Account where those funds would be put back into the account to start developing the self sustaining model for those students. I think it is a great idea for those upper elementary students to learn how to own their own business". It was then unanimously approved by the board to go forward with the program.
Rau then advised the board of the results of the asphalt bids for the area behind the old section of the elementary school, swing-set area with part of the project also being moving and burial of power lines. Two bids were received for the asphalt project including Peshtigo Asphalt and Northeast Asphalt. The bid came down to Peshtigo Asphalt including the gravel and Northeast was not willing to commit to including the gravel. The power line project will cost an additional $5,000 to bury the line and will be done by Olsen Electric. The bid for the asphalt bid was awarded to Peshtigo Asphalt.
Three bids received for the washrooms plumbing project and WDM came in way under the the other bids and offered a little more than the others. That is the one that Director of Buildings and Grounds Brian Willliams felt comfortable with. They did a good job for us in the past and they included ADA toilets and the other ones didn't.
The question was asked by a board member if something is missing in the bid, since they are a lot less than the other bidders. Williams responded, I do not think there is anything missing. This project has already been approved and we have met with the contractors multiple times, I am confident we have everything in this bid. Drainage work in the boys bathroom escalated the cost. I have talked to Enterprise Engineering and I am comfortable we can finish this project within the budget. The total amount of the project is $43,844 for the two bathrooms. It was approved to award the bid to WDM.
In his buildings and grounds report, Josh Seefeldt stated there is a problem with the sprinkler system in the west wing and it has been a very time consuming process narrowing down where those errors are. Also we want to go over with the board how we do our budgeting, capital projects and how we decide what is what so we don't have to come in front of the board multiple times.
A discussion about early retirement age and full time hours was discussed with the result of changing full retirement age from 57 to age 55, along with full time hours adjusted to 35 hours versus 40 hours for the staff.
Jones gave her well wishes to incoming candidate Kevin Roeder, saying, "I wish you nothing but the best and also would like to thank everybody including teachers, staff, former teachers and everyone here. First and foremost is thanking the village in helping to raise our kids, The past 12 years have been great and everyone has been so great to work with. On Wednesdays now I will be at Bands At Badger or in my kayak. I will try to be here for as many of the referendum meetings as I can. Thank You everybody".
Rau then thanked Jones for her service, saying, "Thank you for your 12 years of service. You are part of the board that hired me and I truly appreciate this opportunity very much. I applaud your leadership and your perspective in my four years here and I really appreciate your time".
Items for next months meeting include: A board reorganization special meeting on Wednesday, May 25. Survey results will be given to the board, giving them time to digest and review before the meeting and then determine the plan of how to move forward with the results at the meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m.
